The UVA Writing Center is a writing resource staffed by graduate and undergraduate student tutors and available to all UVA students. Tutors work one on one with students in 50-minute appointments. We can help with drafting, revision, argument structure, and other special concerns. Several of our tutors are trained to work with non-native speakers of English. Though we can offer help at every stage of the writing process, we do not offer proofreading or editing services. Unless your instructor has clearly given you permission in writing (e.g. on the syllabus or assignment), you are not allowed to bring any part of a take-away exam into the Writing Center for help. We cannot work with you on any assignment given under exam conditions, and bringing such an assignment to an appointment may be an honor code violation.
In addition to our center located in 314 Bryan Hall, the UVA Writing Center offers services other locations (see below). For more information, please contact either of the center’s administrators.

Preparing for your Writing Center Appointment
We use an online scheduling system where you can create an account and begin scheduling appointments.
You can schedule one 50-minute tutorial per day. You may schedule up to seven appointments per semester. Requests to waive the limit should be emailed to the assistant director or director.
If you cannot make your scheduled appointment, please cancel as far ahead of time as possible. Any student who misses three appointments will be blocked from using our scheduling system.
What to Bring
- A clean printout of your paper, no longer than 8 pages.
- A copy of any relevant assignment sheets for your essay.
- Anything you will need to take notes.
What to Expect
During a 50-minute session a tutor will talk with you about your writing, starting with your questions or concerns. A tutor may also read with you through an assignment, draft, paper, or selected portions of a longer paper. The tutor may also discuss with you some suggestions for improving your writing and/or developing your writing process if you are in the early stages of an assignment.
